synthesis of 5 sources
When you look at the evidence and inferences from the 3 primary documents and video clip, you can determine that the quote is correct, the idea of rebellion, cohesion, and the possibility of separation was firmly implanted, into the subconscious of the colonists before the actual act of declaring war. The first primary document, the Circular Letter of the Boston Committee of Correspondence, talks of both rebellion and cohesion in the way it encourages the rest of the colonies to band together and boycott goods from Britain. Then it acknowledges the subconscious possibility of separation when it goes on to talk of not submitting to a wrongful government. The second primary document, the letter from the New York Committee to the Boston Committee, tentatively agrees with the first document’s ideas of rebellion, but says it relies on the cohesion of the colonies. The third document firmly and cohesively agrees upon the first documents idea of rebellion and, through that agreement, must have planted the thought that they might be separated from Britain. The Declaration of American Rights shows a sense of cohesion in that it was a joint effort by the colonies and recognized as such, and shows a sense of rebellion in that it slanders and declares morally unjust previous acts of Parliament. The video confirms these thoughts when it talks of Benjamin Franklin declaring that if they did not quit the unjust taxes, he and other would go to the colonies and boycott British goods. Another way it confirms that the ideas of cohesion and separation is that the video said that the colonists greatly rejoiced after the stamp act was repealed, not because they would have to pay less, but because it showed that they had a say in what happened. The sense of cohesion that must have formed for them to feel this way and then been strengthened by the success must have been immense. These all agree with the quote which can be summarized to say that the war was merely a side effect of a “Revolution of the Mind” which had already been taking place for the past 15 years and ended upon the decision to openly revolt.
